Each year the California Historical Society
recognizes a Californian who has made significant contributions
to our state and its vibrant history. On December 4, 2002,
the Society has the great pleasure of honoring chef, author, and
proprietor of Chez Panisse Restaurant, Alice Waters at the
10th annual Hats Off! luncheon.
Ms.
Waters has developed a network of local purveyors whose dedication
to sustainable agriculture assures Chez Panisse its steady supply
of pure and fresh ingredients. In 1996, in celebration of the restaurants
25th anniversary, she created the Chez Panisse Foundation to help
underwrite cultural and education programs, such as the Edible Schoolyard
at Berkeleys Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School, that demonstrate
the transformative power of growing, cooking, and sharing food.
